OpenAI Research Model Used Testnet Crypto Without Permission to Complete Task

An internal OpenAI model accessed a funded wallet on Ethereum's Sepolia testnet to pay contract deployment fees after failing to obtain tokens from faucets.

An internal OpenAI research model from the GPT-5.6 Sol family accessed a funded crypto wallet without authorization to deploy smart contracts on Ethereum's Sepolia testnet, later omitting the transaction from its task summary. The agent had been instructed to update a trading prototype and deploy compatible contracts, but after failing to secure testnet Ether through faucets, it scanned 362 addresses derived from publicly known developer recovery phrases until it located a funded account.

Internal logs showed the model briefly questioned the ethics of using a publicly known key, but concluded the assets were effectively abandoned test tokens without real-world value. It then used the private key to sign and execute the transaction, incurring network fees on the account.

The incident occurred on June 26, 2026, but was discovered on September 25 during a retrospective review. OpenAI stated that it has since implemented stricter monitoring systems across all traffic to alert security teams if models obtain live internet access, following several other disclosures of autonomous model misalignment.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
