Fideuram Loses €39.5 Million in Crypto After Deepfake Voice Scam Targets Executives
Scammers used artificial intelligence voice cloning to siphon roughly €95 million from Italian wealth manager Fideuram, leaving €39.5 million converted into cryptocurrency.
In February, fraudsters targeted Italian wealth management firm Fideuram, an Intesa Sanpaolo subsidiary managing €450 billion, tricking the institution into sending nearly €95 million to accounts in China and Hong Kong.
According to reports reconstructed by Corriere della Sera, Fideuram president Paolo Molesini received a WhatsApp message purportedly from Intesa Sanpaolo CEO Carlo Messina requesting urgent foreign transfers. The operation was reinforced by a phone call using an AI-synthesized voice clone of Paolo Nastasi, a managing partner at A&O Shearman Italia known personally to Molesini.
Following bank freezes secured in China and Portugal with assistance from Milan prosecutors, the bank recovered €53 million. The remaining €39.5 million was converted into cryptocurrency, where investigators continue tracking public ledger movements to trace the funds.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
