Solana Reduces Target Slot Time to 250 Milliseconds Under SIMD-0525
Solana shortened its target slot duration to 250 milliseconds on September 18, increasing network clock speed without raising capacity limits.
Solana lowered its target slot time from 300 milliseconds to 250 milliseconds on September 18, increasing block generation frequency from approximately 3.33 slots per second to four. According to CoinDesk, the change accelerates the network's clock cadence by nearly 17%.
The timing adjustment was implemented under the SIMD-0525 proposal, which simultaneously cuts per-slot computation and data ceilings in proportion to the reduced duration. The faster cadence compresses the operational duration of validator assignments. While the leader window remains fixed at four consecutive slots, the elapsed leadership period shortens from 1.2 seconds to one second. Additionally, because Solana's epochs remain fixed at 432,000 slots, expected epoch duration decreases from previous levels to approximately 30 hours.
