Anthropic Credit Rating Fuels Debate on Fixed Income and Bitcoin
Credit rating downgrades in the tech sector and rising Treasury yields are prompting debate over traditional portfolios and Bitcoin's role as a benchmark asset.
Kroll Bond Rating Agency assigned AI developer Anthropic a BB+ credit rating in June, a decision made public in October that places the company one notch below investment grade. The speculative grade applied to $4.4 billion in junior debt within Anthropic’s $35 billion AI chip financing arrangement, which carried an annual yield of roughly 8.5% compared to 5.75% on senior debt backed by Broadcom.
The rating development coincided with broader pressure in fixed-income markets, where 10-year US Treasury yields reached a 24-year peak above 5.3% in early October. Rising yields reduce the value of existing bonds, leading ParaFi investor Jeff Park to question the long-term viability of the standard 60/40 allocation between equities and debt. Blockstream chief executive Adam Back argued that Bitcoin should serve as the hurdle rate against which all other investment returns are measured.
However, market observers note that Bitcoin's inherent price volatility presents clear differences compared to sovereign debt, which still carries significantly lower default risk. Analyst Willy Woo has also highlighted that an economy anchored to Bitcoin could experience slower expansion because debt obligations would become more difficult to settle. Furthermore, bond exchange-traded funds have continued to register record capital inflows.
