Solana Foundation Schedules Alpenglow Consensus Upgrade for October 21

The network's upcoming protocol update will replace TowerBFT to accelerate transaction finality to roughly 150 milliseconds.

· +5

The Solana Foundation has scheduled its Alpenglow consensus transition for October 21 at approximately 15:00 UTC, coinciding with the start of epoch 1064 on mainnet-beta. Developed over 18 months, the upgrade replaces the existing TowerBFT mechanism with a new voting framework known as Votor.

Under the current TowerBFT model, transactions achieve final, irreversible status in about 12.8 seconds as validator votes accumulate on-chain across 32 slots. The Alpenglow transition shifts voting off the main ledger, enabling validators to communicate directly and certify blocks in one or two voting rounds. This design aims to cut finality down to approximately 150 milliseconds.

Immediate finalization occurs when 80% or more of active stake endorses a block on the first round, while a second round with a 60% threshold resolves outcomes when support is between 60% and 80%. Because validator votes will no longer be registered as on-chain transactions, Solana's reported transactions-per-second statistics are expected to drop sharply without reflecting a loss in actual user activity.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
