Solana Activates Rent Reduction Mechanism Unlocking Over 3 Million SOL
A network upgrade initiated on September 3 slashes account storage costs by 90%, enabling users and programs to reclaim surplus locked SOL.
The Solana network activated an on-chain rent reduction mechanism on September 3, initiating a process designed to lower storage requirements for on-chain accounts by roughly 90%. The change follows another major governance decision in the same week, where network validators approved a plan to cut future SOL issuance by 18.9 million tokens.
Under the first phase of the SIMD-0437 rollout, the required storage cost dropped 9% across five feature gates, reducing the Lamports-per-byte threshold from 6,960 to 6,333. Because existing accounts maintain their historical balances, the lowered requirement leaves them with surplus funds that can be reclaimed without terminating the accounts.
Across more than 1.16 billion token accounts holding an aggregate of 3.425 million SOL in rent balances, the full five-stage rollout is expected to make approximately 3.08 million SOL reclaimable—valued at roughly $307 million to $319 million. The mechanism does not function as an automated distribution; eligible token programs must manually withdraw excess balances before they can be utilized.
Following the network changes, SOL rebounded from a low of $99 to reach a local peak of $105, trading at around $104 with a 4.01% daily gain at the time of the report.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
