Bitcoin developers race to find AI-exploitable flaws before attackers
A volunteer group of roughly 20 developers is proactively scanning Bitcoin software for vulnerabilities discoverable by AI, warning that cheaper, more powerful models have given attackers new capabilities.
The Bitcoin Red Team, formed as an emergency response to AI-assisted security threats, is working to identify vulnerabilities across the Bitcoin ecosystem before malicious actors do. The group's pseudonymous founder Calle, who maintains the open-source Cashu protocol, told Decrypt that the effort is a race against time.
The team comprises about 20 to 25 volunteers, many operating under pseudonyms, alongside named developers including Ben Carmen, Daniela Brozzoni, James O'Beirne, and others. The group began after Rob Hamilton, CEO of Bitcoin insurance firm AnchorWatch, started examining Bitcoin projects following the Coldcard hardware wallet breach.
Calle stressed that while the Bitcoin protocol itself remains secure, the applications, wallets, and services built around it may not be. "Although Bitcoin itself is secure, the software that we're using to transact with Bitcoin may not be, and that is what most people interface with anyway," he said. The Red Team receives inbound security scan requests from projects and also conducts proactive searches for weaknesses. Calle cited the release of more powerful Chinese AI models, particularly Kimi K3, as accelerating both attackers' and defenders' capabilities. The group has spent approximately $20,000 to date, with funding already secured.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
