Tether Prepares Return to Bitcoin Network via Utexo and RGB Protocol Integration
Tether plans to issue USDT on the Bitcoin network using the RGB protocol, though off-chain transaction structures may limit miner fee revenue and direct demand for BTC.
Tether is preparing to relaunch its $184 billion USDT stablecoin on the Bitcoin network in October 2026, marking a return to the blockchain where the asset first launched via the Omni protocol in 2014 before shifting volume to faster networks such as Tron and Ethereum.
The issuance will be managed by Utexo, a Tether-backed firm licensed to distribute USDT through exchanges, digital wallets, and payment providers. Utexo operates on the RGB protocol, which processes and stores transaction details off the main ledger. This design enables confidential transfers, direct BTC-to-USDT swaps, and Bitcoin-backed borrowing without minting new assets, with additional plans to connect USDT to the Lightning Network.
While Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino framed the expansion as a return home, the structural setup may offer limited economic impact for Bitcoin miners and token holders. Because RGB processes data off-chain, transaction fees generated for miners are expected to be significantly lower than full on-chain activity. Furthermore, holding USDT constitutes a claim on Tether rather than exposure to BTC, leaving Bitcoin supply and underlying token demand unaffected.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
