Tether Allocates $600 Million to Farmland Alongside Gold and Bitcoin Reserves
Stablecoin issuer Tether has acquired majority control of a South American agribusiness to diversify its balance sheet alongside Bitcoin and gold.
Tether has expanded its asset reserves by purchasing a roughly 70% controlling stake in Adecoagro, a Nasdaq-listed agribusiness managing more than 200,000 hectares across Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. The total investment reached approximately $600 million in September 2025 following an initial $100 million purchase in 2024.
Tether chief executive Paolo Ardoino described the agricultural holdings as a tangible hedge against dollar debasement and systemic market instability, aligning with the firm's existing allocations to gold and Bitcoin. The company also intends to utilize renewable energy generated by the farming operations to power Bitcoin mining activities.
While diversifying into tangible and digital assets, Tether continues to maintain approximately $141 billion in US Treasuries as of its first-quarter 2026 attestation. A full financial audit conducted by KPMG confirmed that reserves exceeded liabilities by $6.8 billion at the end of 2025, resulting in an unqualified opinion, though Tether has not published the underlying audit documentation.
