Hackers Demand Monero Ransom Following Revolut Crypto Customer Data Breach
Attackers posing as Italian law enforcement obtained sensitive identification and transaction records of 680 Revolut crypto users, demanding $3 million in Monero.
A hacking group using the moniker "iamnotavillain" has demanded 6,000 Monero, worth roughly $3 million, after obtaining confidential customer records from fintech company Revolut. The breach compromised the data of at least 680 high-net-worth cryptocurrency clients across 31 countries, exposing identity verification selfies, passports, physical addresses, account details, and complete transaction histories.
The perpetrators conducted preliminary reconnaissance by analyzing public blockchains to identify accounts holding significant crypto balances, a tactic corroborated by researcher ZachXBT. Using an email domain associated with the Italian Ministry of the Interior, the attackers submitted fraudulent law enforcement information requests over several months. Revolut's internal verification systems processed the fraudulent requests as legitimate police inquiries.
Revolut confirmed the unauthorized disclosure on September 12, 2026, and notified the affected individuals. While the company stated that its underlying infrastructure, databases, and customer funds remained untouched, the hackers published their ransom demand on September 16 with a 24-hour timer. Revolut reported receiving no direct communication from the group. The attackers chose Monero for the ransom demand because Bitcoin's public ledger enables analytics firms and exchanges to track and blacklist illicit wallets.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
