Altcoin Open Interest Overtakes Bitcoin as Derivatives Leverage Builds

Surging leverage in alternative cryptocurrencies has outpaced Bitcoin's derivatives market despite ongoing spot-driven demand for BTC.

Data from Coinalyze shows that open interest in altcoin perpetual futures surpassed Bitcoin's on September 6, marking the first such crossover since December 2024. While Bitcoin's price appreciation remains supported by direct spot demand and call-option activity following an initial short-covering phase, speculative leverage has expanded sharply across alternative crypto assets.

Much of the shift was driven by Zcash, whose derivatives book reached an all-time high near $2.4 billion amid a monthly rally of roughly 150% and approximately $34 million in short liquidations. Trading interest in ZEC was further supported by Grayscale's filing to convert its Zcash trust into a spot exchange-traded fund. Outside of Zcash, Ether and assets connected to Robinhood's blockchain network, including the Pons memecoin launchpad, also posted strong gains.

Speaking on CNBC's Halftime Report, Michael Bucella, co-founder and managing partner of Neoclassic Capital, observed that the accumulation of altcoin leverage resembles market dynamics seen prior to a major liquidation event in October 2025. Although Bitcoin has maintained ETF-backed support despite late-August outflows, the article notes uncertainty over whether the elevated leverage in the broader market can unwind without disruption.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
