Boltz Bitcoin Swap Protocol Suspends Services After AI-Assisted Attacks

The leading Bitcoin atomic swap protocol has halted operations indefinitely following a sustained wave of sophisticated automated exploits, though no customer funds were at risk.

Boltz, the dominant protocol for Bitcoin atomic swaps and cross-chain bridges, suspended its services indefinitely after experiencing repeated sophisticated attacks over recent months. The protocol cited a pattern of AI-assisted probing and exploits originating from well-resourced groups that it could not contain at its current operational scale.

The shutdown, which began on August 1, cut off swap functionality across Lightning and Liquid rails used by wallets including Aqua and Bitcoin Bull. In a statement, the Boltz team explained that while each attack had been contained, the accelerating pace of exploitation attempts made it impossible to responsibly maintain the service. The team noted that attackers were iterating faster than the team could identify and patch vulnerabilities.

User Bitcoin remained secure throughout due to Boltz's non-custodial architecture, meaning the protocol never held customer funds directly. The company absorbed operational costs internally and kept its API running to process refunds for pending swaps.

The Boltz suspension came amid a broader wave of cryptocurrency infrastructure attacks. In late July and early August, separate exploits targeting Metronome and related systems resulted in losses exceeding $16 million. A prominent recent vulnerability in Coldcard firmware has drained approximately $116 million in Bitcoin. Lucas Ferreira of Bitcoin non-profit Vinteum characterized the challenge as stemming from small teams facing increasingly sophisticated hacker groups equipped with automation tools.

Several services that depended on Boltz announced efforts to restore functionality. Bull Bitcoin, Aqua wallet operator JAN3, and Lightning wallet ZEUS all indicated they were working with Boltz on recovery efforts.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
