Crypto Liquidations Exceed $930 Million as Bitcoin Breaks Past $86,000

A sharp upward surge in the price of Bitcoin forced the liquidation of hundreds of millions of dollars in short derivative positions within a single day.

Total liquidations across cryptocurrency derivative markets reached $930.04 million in a 24-hour period as Bitcoin moved above the $86,000 mark, according to CoinGlass data. Bitcoin stood at $86,038 at the time of reporting, reflecting a 5.5% advance over the preceding 24 hours.

The liquidations fell predominantly on traders holding short positions. Bitcoin shorts accounted for $454.95 million in losses, compared with $52.96 million in long liquidations. Ethereum derivatives saw $172.68 million in short positions and $28.61 million in longs wiped out.

In total, more than 131,000 traders had leveraged positions closed out during the rally. The largest single liquidation recorded was an $11.29 million Bitcoin contract on Binance.
