Ethereum Staking Hits Record 34% of Supply as Validator Rewards Fall to 3-Year Low
Ethereum's staked supply has reached an all-time high of 41.41 million ETH, but the expansion has compressed validator returns to their lowest level since 2023.
Ethereum staking participation has reached a record 33.98% of circulating supply as of August 2026, a milestone that signals strong network conviction. Yet this achievement masks a fundamental shift in staking economics: the 7-day annual percentage rate for validators has collapsed to 2.66%, down 47% from a peak of 5.06% in June 2023.
The compression stems from basic mathematics. As more ETH enters the validator set, the same fixed protocol issuance gets distributed across a larger pool of participants, reducing per-validator rewards. New entrants today earn substantially less than those who staked at the market's peak, reshaping incentives for institutions and liquid staking protocols sizing positions.
This yield squeeze triggered a sustained exit from the validator set. The active validator count peaked near 1.09 million in July 2025, then contracted to around 880,000 by mid-2026 as operators found staking uneconomic below the 3% threshold. As of early August 2026, the trend has slightly reversed, with active validators recovering to approximately 893,000. However, record participation and record yield compression remain two sides of the same economic phenomenon.
