Transfers of XRP to cryptocurrency exchanges require a destination tag, an unsigned 32-bit integer that ranges from 0 to 4,294,967,295. The identifier enables exchange systems to credit incoming deposits to specific user accounts within a single deposit address.

This architecture is driven by the XRP Ledger's reserve structure, which requires a minimum base balance of 1 XRP per address alongside 0.2 XRP per additional entry. To avoid the financial and network overhead of maintaining distinct on-chain addresses for millions of users, platforms route deposits through pooled accounts.
