BIP-110 Bitcoin fork stalls with minimal miner support
A Bitcoin branch enforcing the BIP-110 proposal has ground to a halt after producing only two blocks, trailing the main chain by 88 blocks.
The BIP-110-enforcing fork stopped advancing at block 961,633 on Sunday, having mined just two blocks, while the non-enforcing chain continued to 961,721. According to the BIP-110 monitor, the branch's latest block was produced approximately 12 hours before the update. Mining group Roughnecks, operating through Ocean's DATUM protocol, produced both blocks on the fork.
The divergence emerged after BIP-110 entered mandatory signaling at block 961,632 on Saturday. Only 51 of the preceding 2,016 blocks—2.53%—signalled support for the proposal. At this stage, BIP-110 nodes reject non-signalling blocks while ordinary Bitcoin nodes accept both types. Mandatory signaling will continue through block 963,647, and the enforcing fork must mine through the remaining 2,016-block adjustment period before difficulty can reset, limiting progress without substantially more hash power.
The proposal has drawn criticism from prominent figures in the Bitcoin community. Michael Saylor, strategy executive chairman, acknowledged shared objectives but expressed concern that the approach undermines Bitcoin's neutral ruleset and consensus mechanisms. Adam Back, Blockstream's chief executive, warned that consensus-level changes risk damaging Bitcoin's credibility and could render certain unspent transaction outputs unspendable.
