Saylor: Bitcoin network rejects BIP-110 fork attempt

Michael Saylor has claimed that BIP-110, a fork of Bitcoin's software with modified rules, was widely rejected by the broader Bitcoin community. While the fork was technically possible thanks to Bitcoin's open design, it failed to attract sufficient support from miners, users, wallets, exchanges, and institutions.

The BIP-110 branch generated only two blocks before falling more than 80 blocks behind the main chain. According to Saylor, supporters would need to mine approximately 2,015 additional blocks at current rates before experiencing their first difficulty adjustment—a process that could take around 25 years.

Saylor argues the outcome demonstrates Bitcoin's decentralized governance functioning as intended. He contends that while anyone can fork Bitcoin's code, no one can force the ecosystem to accept an alternative as legitimate. The matter hinges on economic consensus rather than technical feasibility.

Dan Held, General Partner at Asymmetric Financial, expressed similar views, arguing that BIP-110 consumed substantial developer resources without building sufficient community support. Held also claimed some supporters attempted to sway miners and companies through public pressure and harassment rather than standard technical discussion.
