Bitcoin faces distribution risk as large holders begin selling

Bitcoin price sits amid a flurry of bullish forecasts from major institutions and market figures. Robinhood has speculated that additional countries could follow the U.S. Strategic Reserve model, Standard Chartered has reiterated a $500,000 target, and prominent figures including CZ and Arthur Hayes have made aggressive price calls. Strive has reportedly purchased over 1,100 BTC for $80 million, raising its holdings above 21,000 BTC.

However, on-chain balance data reveals a more complex picture beneath the bullish narrative. While the 100–1,000 BTC and 1,000–10,000 BTC cohorts have shown renewed accumulation, the largest tracked holders tell a different story. The 10,000–100,000 BTC wallet cohort accumulated through mid-June into the recent rally but peaked around August 21 before declining sharply by August 24. This distribution from the biggest holders came precisely as bullish sentiment intensified. Smaller retail holders have not aggressively participated in the rally, with the 0.001–1 BTC cohort showing declining holdings since late July and the 1–100 BTC group distributing since mid-July. If intermediate-sized holders are absorbing supply from large sellers while retail remains cautious, the setup may present risk despite the bullish rhetoric.
