Bank of Japan Raises Interest Rate to 1.25% as Bitcoin Holds Above $77,000
The Japanese central bank lifted borrowing costs to a 31-year high in a divided vote, while cryptocurrency markets remained steady.
The Bank of Japan raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to 1.25% at its September 17–18 meeting, marking its second rate hike in three months and bringing domestic borrowing costs to their highest level since 1995. The policy board voted 7–2 in favor, with members Toichiro Asada and Ayano Sato opposing the increase.
The central bank acted in response to inflationary pressures, as Japan's core consumer inflation reached 1.7% year-over-year in August amid elevated energy costs and a weaker currency. The Japanese yen softened by as much as 0.8% to 157.145 against the US dollar following the decision, preventing immediate disruptions across yen carry trades. The move followed recent 25-basis-point rate increases by the Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank.
Cryptocurrency markets absorbed the policy tightening calmly. Bitcoin remained above $77,000 and total digital asset market capitalization held near $2.73 trillion, supported in part by approximately $159 million in Bitcoin ETF inflows recorded on September 17.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
