MicroStrategy says AI helped design financing tools that raised $15 billion for Bitcoin
The company used artificial intelligence to develop new preferred stock instruments that enabled it to raise capital for Bitcoin purchases when traditional financing options became constrained.
MicroStrategy founder Michael Saylor revealed that artificial intelligence played a key role in designing financing structures that generated $15 billion for the company's Bitcoin acquisition strategy. As MicroStrategy's Bitcoin holdings reached 842,138 BTC worth about $30 billion by early 2025, the company had exhausted conventional funding channels—it was already among the world's largest convertible bond issuers and faced shareholder dilution concerns with further common stock issuance.
Instead of relying on traditional Wall Street approaches, Saylor explained that the company turned to AI to design STRK, a Bitcoin-backed convertible preferred stock combining traditional finance with cryptocurrency strategy. MicroStrategy raised $2.5 billion through a STRK IPO followed by $8 billion via shelf registration, totalling around $10.5 billion in STRK sales. Saylor noted that lawyers and bankers initially resisted the product because it was unfamiliar to the market.
The company later deployed AI to create STRC, a short-term preferred stock designed to maintain a value near $100 through monthly dividend adjustments. STRC generated another $4 billion. Together, these AI-designed instruments allowed MicroStrategy to mobilise approximately $15 billion to sustain its Bitcoin accumulation programme.
