Pantera Capital Founder Links Bitcoin August Gain to US Bond Buyback Policy

Dan Morehead of Pantera Capital argued that the US Treasury's expanded debt repurchases failed to convince markets, driving investor interest toward bitcoin.

Pantera Capital founder Dan Morehead stated on Bloomberg Crypto that the US Treasury’s increased bond buyback initiative failed to reassure investors, linking Bitcoin’s 26% August gain to the policy move. On August 19, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent raised the repurchase cap to at least $4 billion per operation to moderate borrowing costs. However, Morehead contended that this amount is negligible compared to the $2 trillion in annual bond issuance, arguing it highlighted the scale of government debt.

Bitcoin recorded its strongest August performance since 2021, briefly climbing above $81,000 before settling around $77,258. Morehead described cryptocurrency as a macro trade that gains traction as sovereign debt expands, noting his firm's four-year cycle model continues to anticipate another upward leg following the current consolidation.

The bullish debt outlook faces macroeconomic counterpoints, notably from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who stated at Jackson Hole that stronger economic expansion could keep interest rates elevated and reduce demand for non-yielding assets. Following those remarks, both Bitcoin and gold experienced pullbacks. Morehead nonetheless stated that he expects a fresh upswing to begin toward the end of the year.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
