Contest Participants Cut Quantum Computing Resources Needed for Cryptographic Attack by 86%
Researchers assisted by artificial intelligence have significantly reduced the theoretical quantum computing requirements for a step used in breaking crypto signatures.
Participants in the ECDSA.Fail competition, organized by Eigen Labs, reduced the theoretical computational resources required for a key calculation within Shor's algorithm by 86.1%. More than 100 participants, assisted by artificial intelligence agents, worked to optimize a mathematical step relevant to attacking the secp256k1 cryptographic scheme used to authorize Bitcoin and Ethereum transactions.
According to a report published on arXiv, the benchmark score measuring machine size and circuit complexity dropped from 10.75 billion at the contest's start to 1.496 billion by July 26. The most efficient circuit developed requires 1,151 logical qubits and roughly 1.3 million complex quantum operations, coming in more than 50% below a benchmark published by Google Quantum AI in March, though calculation methodologies differed between the two studies.
The findings do not mean existing quantum hardware can compromise private keys or steal assets today, as no private keys were recovered during the challenge. The researchers only optimized a single stage of the attack process rather than the entire decryption pipeline, though the organizers noted that software optimization can bring theoretical risks closer even without hardware breakthroughs.
