Quantum Computing Breakthrough Could Go Undetected, Crypto Executives Warn

When quantum computers become powerful enough to break modern cryptography, the attack may leave no forensic evidence, according to blockchain security experts.

The first successful quantum attack on cryptocurrency infrastructure may not be immediately obvious. Rather than a headline-grabbing theft of high-profile Bitcoin addresses, it could manifest as a series of isolated wallet breaches leaving no trace of methodology, according to Christopher Smith, CEO of Quantus Network.

Smith explained that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could extract private keys from public keys exposed on blockchain, allowing an attacker to move funds without compromising wallet security or exchange systems. This creates a detection problem: "the only forensic evidence would be that there was no breach," Smith told Cointelegraph. The challenge of identifying such an attack has grown more acute following recent advances in quantum algorithms that have lowered estimates of computing power required to break elliptic-curve cryptography used by major blockchains.

While much public concern has focused on the possibility of quantum attackers targeting Satoshi Nakamoto's dormant Bitcoin holdings—worth $63 billion at current prices—Smith suggested attackers might instead pursue even higher-value targets, such as cryptocurrency issuer administrative wallets. He noted that a quantum attacker with access to Tether's minting key could create tokens out of thin air and dump them on markets before the issuer could respond. USDT is deployed across multiple blockchains, some of which have already begun work on post-quantum cryptography migration.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
