Bitcoin holds $65K as BTCPay exploit and BIP-110 fork create headwinds
Bitcoin trades near $65,000 despite a critical Lightning Network breach at BTCPay Server and a contentious fork proposal that garnered insufficient miner support.
Bitcoin rose 0.61% to $64,986 on Saturday, approaching the $65,000 level even as the network faced two distinct security challenges. The resilience was notable given the technical pressure.
On Friday evening, attackers exploited a critical vulnerability in BTCPay Server infrastructure to extract authentication credentials controlling Lightning Network nodes powered by LND technology. The breach granted unauthorized access to "macaroon" authentication files — digital keys that can control Lightning wallets, terminate payment channels, and move funds. BTCPay developers issued an urgent advisory recommending immediate upgrades to version 2.4.2 or complete server shutdowns. Hardware wallet maker Foundation confirmed its BTCPay-connected Lightning node was fully drained, though its primary on-chain hot wallet remained secure. Citadel21, a Bitcoin-focused publication, also reported Lightning node losses. Traditional on-chain wallets within BTCPay remained unaffected, though cryptocurrency held in LND node on-chain wallets continued facing exposure.
In parallel, BIP-110 — a fork proposal to restrict non-transactional data embedded in Bitcoin's blockchain — emerged as a second concern. Scheduled for potential activation near block height 961,632, the proposal failed to attract sufficient support. Mining pool backing registered approximately 2.6% as of Friday, dramatically short of the 55% consensus required for mainstream adoption. A minority fork backed by BIP-110 supporters fell 18 blocks behind the main chain, illustrating the proposal's inability to gain traction.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs provided a counterpoint to these concerns, recording $1 billion in weekly inflows.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
