Standard Chartered Begins Institutional Spot Bitcoin and Ether Settlement in Dubai
Standard Chartered has launched a physical cryptocurrency delivery desk in Dubai, making it the first global systemically important bank to offer the service.
Standard Chartered has begun offering deliverable spot Bitcoin and Ether to institutional clients through its Dubai entity, enabling customers to receive direct settlement of actual digital assets rather than derivative contracts. The offering operates under the regulatory oversight of the Dubai Financial Services Authority.
According to the Financial Stability Board's 2025 designations, Standard Chartered is the only institution among the 29 designated globally systemically important banks to provide physical spot crypto delivery. The bank operates in the lowest systemic risk bracket with a 1% capital surcharge, below peers such as JPMorgan, Citigroup, and HSBC.
The Dubai execution desk completes a phased rollout across Dubai and London that began with custody services in September 2024 for hedge fund Brevan Howard Digital, followed by London spot trading in July 2025 and USDC minting in July 2026. The bank intends to generate fees across trading spreads, clearing, and custody, while retail clients remain excluded from the platform.
