Bitcoin completes first quantum-safe spending transaction on mainnet
A transaction using quantum-safe Bitcoin methodology developed by Starkware researcher Avihu Levy has been successfully confirmed on the Bitcoin mainnet.
Bitcoin has demonstrated its first mainnet transaction using an experimental quantum-safe approach, marking a milestone in defensive cryptography. Researcher Avihu Levy created the quantum-safe Bitcoin (QSB) method to protect Bitcoin holdings from future threats posed by quantum computing without requiring changes to Bitcoin's consensus rules or a soft fork.
The QSB approach shifts Bitcoin's security model away from elliptic curve cryptography, which could theoretically become vulnerable to quantum computers running Shor's algorithm. Instead, it relies on hash-based assumptions. A quantum attacker with sufficient capability could potentially derive a private key from an exposed public key and steal associated funds. QSB adds protection by using signature grinding—the sender performs computational work off-chain to find a transaction hash meeting specific conditions, then broadcasts a transaction that Bitcoin's network accepts without needing to recognize new rules.
The method is experimental and currently impractical as a replacement for Bitcoin's existing transaction system due to computational requirements. However, the successful mainnet transaction demonstrates that the concept can function within Bitcoin's current architecture.
