Open-Source Entropy32 Plus Project Uses Radioactive Decay to Generate Bitcoin Seeds
An open-source hardware device called Entropy32 Plus generates Bitcoin seed phrases by harvesting physical entropy from radioactive decay events.
An open-source hardware initiative named Entropy32 Plus has introduced a method to create Bitcoin wallet seed phrases using radioactive decay as a source of physical entropy. The offline build relies on quantum-level unpredictability to generate keys rather than deterministic, software-based random number generators.
The device connects a Geiger counter through an audio jack to capture radiation pulses from ambient or dedicated sources. An LM393 comparator converts raw voltage spikes at a 0.5V bias into digital signals, measuring the exact intervals between successive pulses to harvest raw timing data.
The collected timing intervals are processed through a SHA-256 conditioning step to eliminate statistical bias before mapping onto the standard 2,048-word BIP39 list. Built around an ATmega328P microcontroller with an OLED screen, the fully offline device has not yet undergone formal NIST SP 800-90B validation, according to its developer.
