Vitalik Buterin Highlights Cryptographic Vulnerabilities From AI Advances Over a Two-Year Horizon
Vitalik Buterin cautioned that mathematical breakthroughs fueled by artificial intelligence could compromise lattice-based security and standard digital signatures.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has warned that artificial intelligence could accelerate mathematical problem-solving enough to weaken lattice-based encryption standards within two years. Such breakthroughs could also compromise the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA) protecting Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets sooner than previously anticipated. Despite the warning, Buterin advised that holders do not need to rush to transfer assets immediately.
The remarks came in response to Ethereum researcher Justin Drake, who proposed preparing contingency protocols. Buterin questioned the widespread assumption that lattice-based methods remain permanently secure, noting they support quantum-resistant tools like ML-DSA and Fully Homomorphic Encryption. Drawing parallels to past advances in factoring algorithms, he argued that AI could compress decades of mathematical research into a very short timeframe.
To mitigate potential vulnerabilities, Ethereum's Lean upgrade roadmap has spent the past year shifting toward hash-based signature designs, including SPHINCS and WOTS, which do not rely on structured mathematical patterns. Meanwhile, Drake noted that Bitcoin also faces exposure due to its reliance on ECDSA, though certain unexposed public keys benefit from initial address protections.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
