Blockstream Rejects Ransom Demand as Liquid Network Attackers Retain Nearly 600 Bitcoin
Infrastructure firm Blockstream has refused a bounty request from hackers holding roughly 598 Bitcoin stolen from the Liquid Network sidechain.
Bitcoin infrastructure developer Blockstream has formally rejected a ransom demand from attackers who continue to hold roughly 598 BTC following a security breach on the Liquid Network sidechain. The company classified the withholding of assets as theft rather than responsible disclosure, stating it will not pay a requested 10% bounty from its own reserves.
The attackers had demanded the payout in an onchain communication disclosed by Jan3 CEO Samson Mow, warning that Liquid users would suffer a 15% haircut if the demand went unmet. In response, Blockstream stated that if the remaining Bitcoin is not returned voluntarily, it will collaborate with law enforcement agencies, digital asset exchanges, and blockchain forensic specialists to track the funds.
The security incident began on September 6, when attackers claiming to be white-hat researchers drained approximately 4,000 BTC—valued at roughly $320 million at the time—from Liquid's federation wallet. After Blockstream deployed patches to affected bridge nodes, the attackers returned 3,400 BTC. While Liquid resumed generating empty blocks on Thursday following emergency updates, transfers and network transactions remain paused.
These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
