Quantum Doomsday Clock Estimates Bitcoin Encryption Breach by March 2028

A specialized tracker estimates that quantum computing advances could threaten Bitcoin elliptic curve signatures by early 2028.

The Quantum Doomsday Clock, developed by Colton Dillion and cryptographer Rick Carback, has updated its timeline to estimate that quantum computing could compromise Bitcoin encryption by March 8, 2028. The projection measures when advanced quantum computers might use Shor's algorithm to derive private keys from exposed public keys, compromising Bitcoin's elliptic curve digital signatures.

The platform projects subsequent timelines for other systems, estimating that international banking and internet infrastructure could face vulnerability in 2029, followed by government and military networks in 2030.

The report highlights accelerated quantum computing activity throughout 2026, including a $2 billion investment announcement from the US Department of Commerce in May and a White House executive order in June. In the private sector, Quantinuum commercially launched its Helios system in late 2025, and IonQ announced the deployment of its Superion 256 computer at Nvidia's quantum research center on September 23, 2026.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
