Bitcoin miner distress deepens as transaction fees reach 7-year low

Bitcoin miners are shifting toward artificial intelligence as declining transaction fees and falling block rewards squeeze profitability and raise concerns about network security.

Bitcoin miners face mounting pressure as transaction fees have fallen to a 7-year low despite Bitcoin's 13-fold value growth over that period, according to Charles Edwards of venture firm Capriole Investments. This trend is pushing miners toward artificial intelligence, raising questions about long-term network security.

Miner revenue depends on two sources: transaction fees and block rewards, which are cut in half every four years during halving cycles. As block rewards decline over time, transaction fees were expected to fill revenue gaps and keep mining operations viable. However, the current fee environment falls far short, creating a potential vulnerability.

The pressure is acute. Bitcoin's price has halved from above $126,000 in late 2025 to around $60,000 in 2026. Daily block subsidy dropped below $30 million by July, while transaction fees sat at $210,000—a twofold decline from mid-2025 daily revenues of $60 million and three times lower than the 2024 record of $95 million. MacroMicro data shows the average cost of mining Bitcoin stood at $70.5K as of August 4, meaning smaller miners cannot operate profitably at current prices around $64.7K.

Miner distress in 2026 has now persisted for 250 days and counting—three times longer than the 2022 bear market's 91 days or 2018's 63 days. This extended downturn is accelerating capital toward AI. Edwards warns that Bitcoin's security is compromised as miners shift focus away from maintaining network hash rate, raising the risk of 51% attacks. MARA CEO Fred Thiel has warned that low transaction fee revenue represents Bitcoin's 'fundamental challenge' after its failure as a payment network, and expects mining to become increasingly difficult after the 2028 halving cycle, which will slash rewards from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
