Most Ethereum Validators Remain on Non-Compounding Withdrawal Credentials
Data shows 97 percent of Ethereum validators automatically sweep staking rewards above 32 ETH rather than compounding them.
According to an analysis conducted by cryptoticker.io on September 9, 2026, roughly 97.0 percent of active Ethereum validators use the 0x01 withdrawal credential type, which automatically sweeps any staking rewards earned above the 32 ETH baseline to an execution address. Only 2.1 percent have adopted the 0x02 format that enables rewards to remain staked and compound over time.
The remaining legacy type, 0x00, dates back to the pre-Shapella network period and locks validator funds until an execution withdrawal address is configured. The analysis followed an announcement from staking provider Lido, which deployed a testnet version of its Community Staking Module utilizing 0x02 credentials on September 8, ahead of a planned mainnet rollout in October 2026 pending DAO approval.
While institutional staking operators are increasingly adopting compounding credentials to optimize pooled capital, individual solo validators have largely maintained the default sweeping configuration, leading to a noticeable structural divergence across the validator set.
