Research Paper Reduces Estimated Quantum Requirements to Target Bitcoin Cryptography

Cryptography researchers have published optimized circuit designs that lower the theoretical computational requirements to target ECDSA encryption.

A cryptography paper published on arXiv on September 9, 2026, presents circuit designs that cut the estimated resources required to execute a key quantum attack step against Bitcoin and Ethereum cryptography by roughly 50% compared to a March benchmark from Google Quantum AI. Bitcoin traded around $79,000 as the findings were released.

The research was conducted under the ECDSA.Fail open challenge initiated by Eigen Labs in May. It focuses on optimizing elliptic-curve point addition within Shor's algorithm, a mathematical process that could theoretically derive private keys from public keys. The team reduced resource requirements by 86.1% from the challenge's baseline, reaching a benchmark of approximately 1.5 billion based on 1,151 logical qubits and 1.3 million Toffoli gates, down from Google's prior estimate of 3 billion.

Subsequent iterations detailed in the paper achieved further reductions, lowering requirements to 950,000 Toffoli gates in a gate-optimized model and 813 logical qubits in a qubit-conserving configuration. While quantum hardware capable of running these operations does not yet exist, StarkWare's Head of Product Growth noted that such algorithmic efficiencies could accelerate timeline estimates for potential quantum decryption threats.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
