Aave Labs Proposes V4 Lending Structure for Anchorage-Custodied Bitcoin
A new governance proposal outlines a mechanism allowing institutional holders to borrow against Bitcoin kept in regulated custody without bridging the underlying assets into DeFi contracts.
Aave Labs has submitted a governance proposal titled "Custodied Collateral Lending: Aave V4 Isolated Hub & Spoke," which introduces a specialized framework for assets held by institutional custodians. Under the initial framework, institutional borrowers would maintain their Bitcoin reserves at Anchorage Digital Bank while drawing stablecoins from an isolated Aave V4 liquidity hub.
Unlike standard wrapped-token systems that require bridging assets directly into decentralized finance contracts, this architecture keeps the underlying Bitcoin inside Anchorage's custody for the duration of the loan. On-chain collateral is instead tracked through a non-transferable Custodied Collateral Token, with Chainlink's CustodySync infrastructure responsible for minting and burning tokens to keep off-chain custody accounts synchronized with Aave lending positions.
The model seeks to address institutional compliance, operational, and security restrictions surrounding the movement of funds out of qualified custody. However, the report notes that the structure introduces dependencies on the speed and precision of data synchronization between custody systems and smart contracts for lending and liquidation actions. The framework currently remains under governance discussion and is not yet an active market.
