Petrobras Tests Cardano Blockchain to Track Sustainable Aviation Fuel Claims
Brazilian energy giant Petrobras has collaborated with academic and blockchain partners to launch a system that tokenises environmental attributes for aviation fuel.
Petrobras has developed CS-SAF, a platform built on the Cardano network designed to track environmental claims associated with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). Developed alongside PUC-Rio University’s Ledger Labs and the Cardano Foundation, the system converts fuel sustainability attributes into digital tokens aligned with CORSIA standards.
The platform operates on a book-and-claim model, which separates the environmental benefits of fuel from its physical distribution. Under this setup, buyers can purchase certified sustainability benefits without receiving physical delivery. The system verifies certificates, mints representative tokens, allocates them to airlines or passenger journeys based on calculated emissions, and permanently retires the tokens on-chain once claimed to prevent duplicate usage.
Petrobras produces SAF at its Duque de Caxias refinery by co-processing petroleum with renewable inputs, an operation that has received CORSIA sustainability certification. The case study emphasizes that while blockchain records provide traceability, formal auditor certification of feedstocks and lifecycle emissions remains necessary. The published study did not disclose airline participants, processed fuel volumes, or the total count of retired tokens.
