Ripple CEO Uses Dutch Central Bank Gold Transfer to Highlight Crypto Settlement Speed

Brad Garlinghouse pointed to an 86-tonne Dutch gold transfer as evidence that traditional financial settlement mechanisms remain slow and inefficient.

Ripple Chief Executive Brad Garlinghouse cited a recent 86-tonne gold relocation by De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) to argue that mainstream financial settlement still relies on outdated operational practices. Between March and August, the Dutch central bank shifted roughly $11 billion in gold reserves to London from New York and Ottawa.

According to the report, nearly 70% of the operation was conducted via paper transactions, with the central bank selling roughly 59 tonnes in New York and repurchasing the same amount in London, while only 27 tonnes were physically shipped. Following the transfer, London holds 32.1% of Dutch gold reserves while New York's share fell to 18.5%. Garlinghouse contrasted these multi-month logistical procedures with crypto asset clearing speeds, also recalling Germany's four-year effort to repatriate 674 tonnes of gold in 2013.

DNB Governor Olaf Sleijpen explained that the reallocation was intended to improve liquidity and crisis readiness, noting that London handles substantially higher physical trading volumes. While the Bank for International Settlements recently tested the XRP Ledger for data anchoring with settlement times under five seconds, the article notes that central banks continue to prioritize physical vault custody over digital alternatives.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
