Bitcoin Clears $81,000 as Geopolitical Tensions Ease and Shorts Liquidate

Bitcoin reclaimed the $80,000 level following a pause in Middle East hostilities, sparking heavy short liquidations across the derivatives market.

Bitcoin rose 5.5% on Thursday to reach $81,491 after trading between $77,000 and $78,000 over the prior two sessions. The broader digital asset market gained 4.7% to hit $2.82 trillion, with Ethereum up 5.2% and Solana climbing 5.9%.

The rebound followed a pause in U.S.-Iran hostilities. Weekend strikes had driven Brent crude above $96 a barrel on shipping disruption risks around the Strait of Hormuz, stoking inflation fears and lowering the likelihood of rate cuts. As tensions eased, the probability of a Federal Reserve rate hike this month dropped from 67% on Wednesday to 50.5% on Thursday evening.

The price advance triggered extensive liquidations among short sellers, with approximately $164 million in short positions closed in four hours compared to $7.3 million in longs. Total crypto liquidations reached $510 million on the day, with $415 million stemming from short positions.

The report notes that previous rallies driven primarily by short squeezes have struggled to maintain momentum. When Bitcoin reached $81,138 on August 25 following $1.4 billion to $4 billion in liquidated bearish bets, the price retreated below $80,000 within three days once forced buying subsided.

These two are not the same thing, and one does not produce the other. The left is how this single article reads, from its tone alone. The right is the site’s own call on the asset, from indicators and analysis. Press tone feeds no score and no signal: on the only corpus this site has measured, daily tone tracked the move that had already happened and showed no measurable link with what followed.
