Circulating Supply vs. Fully Diluted Valuation

Two key terms you'll often see are 'circulating supply' and 'fully diluted valuation.' Circulating supply refers to the tokens that are currently available to the public and being traded. It's the immediate supply you see in the market.

Fully diluted valuation (FDV), on the other hand, represents the total potential value of an asset if all tokens were in circulation. This includes tokens that might be locked away for future release, such as those held by the development team, early investors, or allocated for future rewards. It's a way to look at the total economic pie, even if not all slices are currently being served.

Let's consider a hypothetical asset, 'GlopprCoin.' Suppose there are 100 million GlopprCoin currently circulating, and the price is $1 per coin. Its market capitalization would be 100 million * $1 = $100 million.

Now, imagine there are a total of 200 million GlopprCoin that will ever exist. Of the remaining 100 million, 50 million are locked in a vesting schedule for the development team over five years, and another 50 million are set aside for future network rewards. If all 200 million tokens were in circulation, the fully diluted valuation would be 200 million * $1 = $200 million. This highlights the potential for supply increases to affect the valuation.

Token Unlocks and Their Impact

Many digital assets have 'token unlocks' as part of their design. These are scheduled releases of tokens that are currently locked. Vesting schedules, for instance, are common for tokens allocated to founders, early investors, and team members. These tokens are gradually released over a set period, typically several years.

These unlocks add to the circulating supply over time. This doesn't inherently mean the asset is bad; it's a characteristic of its economic design. An asset with significant upcoming unlocks might see increased selling pressure if existing holders decide to sell their newly acquired tokens. Conversely, if demand for the asset grows alongside these unlocks, the impact might be absorbed more smoothly.

An inflationary asset, with a continuously increasing supply, needs sustained demand growth to keep pace, or the price might face downward pressure if supply outstrips demand. Understanding these mechanisms helps you assess how supply might change and how the asset's design attempts to create or maintain value.

Fixed vs. Inflationary Supply Models

We can see two broad categories emerge: fixed supply and inflationary supply.

Assets with a fixed or capped supply, like Bitcoin, are designed with a predetermined end to the total number of tokens that will ever exist. The economic argument here often centers on scarcity driving value over the long term, assuming consistent or growing demand.

Assets with an inflationary model, where the supply can increase indefinitely, often have mechanisms intended to balance this. This might involve distributing new tokens to incentivize network security (like staking rewards) or to fund ongoing development. The success of such models often depends on the utility and adoption of the network, which ideally drives demand to absorb or outweigh the new supply.

For instance, an asset with an inflation rate of 5% per year might see its circulating supply grow by that percentage, assuming no burning mechanisms are active. If the price of such an asset is $10, and there are 100 million tokens, its market cap is $1 billion. A 5% increase in supply would add 5 million tokens, potentially adding $50 million to the market cap if the price stays the same. The protocol must generate enough demand to support this additional supply.
