If a protocol collects fees in its own token and simultaneously issues a large amount of that same token as incentives, the reported "revenue" might not reflect genuine new value entering the system. Instead, it could be more of an internal redistribution.

For example, imagine a protocol charges users $100 in its native token for a service. It also pays out $80 worth of its native token to liquidity providers as an incentive. If the protocol reports the $100 collected as revenue, it looks like it's generating income. However, if that $100 was collected from users who are also being incentivized by the protocol, or if the value of the token itself is subject to inflation from new issuances, the net economic benefit to the protocol and its long-term token holders might be less significant than the gross number suggests.

Let's consider a hypothetical scenario. Suppose a decentralized exchange protocol, let's call it 'ExampleDex', generates $1,000,000 in fees over a month. This is the gross amount users paid to trade on ExampleDex. The protocol's design dictates that 50% of these fees go to liquidity providers, and 50% is retained by the protocol's treasury.

So, ExampleDex retains $500,000 in fees. This $500,000 is its reported protocol revenue for the month. Now, we can start thinking about valuation metrics. One common approach, borrowed from traditional finance, is the price-to-sales ratio. In crypto, we might look at a price-to-fees ratio, which compares the market capitalization of the protocol's token to gross fees, or a price-to-revenue ratio, which uses only the fees the protocol retains. Here we use retained revenue. However, we must be careful. Are these fees paid in stablecoins or in the protocol's own token?

Let's say the total market capitalization of the ExampleDex token is $100,000,000. If the $500,000 in retained fees were all in stablecoins, a simple price-to-revenue ratio would be $100,000,000 / ($500,000 * 12 months) = 100,000,000 / 6,000,000 = approximately 16.7. This suggests it takes about 16.7 years of current revenue to match the token's market cap.

But what if the $500,000 was generated and retained in ExampleDex's native token, and the protocol also issued another $300,000 worth of its native token as incentives that month? The $500,000 collected in the native token might be subject to the same market forces as the token itself. If the token's value drops, the dollar value of that retained revenue also drops. Furthermore, the 16.7 ratio becomes less meaningful if the supply of the token is increasing due to incentives or other distributions. The market capitalization itself could be inflated by these very incentives.

This is why looking at the source of fees (native token vs. Stablecoin) and understanding the full picture of token issuance and distribution is so important. It helps you move beyond a simple headline number to a more nuanced view of value capture.

Considering Different Protocols

When you look at different crypto assets, you'll see varied models. For example, some networks might charge transaction fees that are primarily used to pay validators or miners, with little revenue directly retained by a central treasury. Other protocols, like lending platforms or decentralized exchanges, often have clearer pathways for revenue retention. For a network like Ethereum, transaction fees are paid to validators and a portion is also burned. For a platform like Solana, transaction fees are generally distributed to validators. The fee structures and revenue retention policies differ significantly across the ecosystem.

For instance, BNB Chain pays transaction fees to validators and burns a portion of them, Ethereum splits fees between validator rewards and a burn, and Solana distributes fees primarily to validators.
